The breakthrough achievements of the Polish chemists allowed the use of the properties of Xanthohumol in cosmetic formulations

The benefits of using Xanthohumol have been widely described in the scientific literature for years. However, the possibility of using this compound in skin therapies was very limited due to the expensive and time-consuming methods of obtaining it from hops. Another challenge was to provide Xanthohumol in an active form to the skin, as this compound is very difficult to store and is prone to degradation.
We are happy to announce that we solved these problems!
In cooperation with Polish scientists, we have developed an innovative and environmentally friendly method of Xanthohumol synthesis. We increased the stability of this compound by combining it with cyclodextrin, therefore creating a highly bio-available complex with increased permeability through the epidermal layers.

Antioxidant activity

Xanthohumol is one of the most powerful antioxidants known, which effectively protects the skin against oxidative stress. Persistent inflammation, caused by oxidative damage is the reason why skin ageing accelerates (inflammaging). It is also responsible for numerous medical conditions, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne and seborrheic dermatitis.

Xanthohumol, as the strongest antioxidant, prevents changes in proteins, such as oxidation or modification of amino acids, which can lead to a weakening of the collagen fibres that build the skin. It also eliminates the peroxidation of lipids (they create the structure of the lipid coat), reduces their permeability and increases stability. And finally, Xanthohumol prevents transmembrane transport disorders.
In terms of the most important parameters determining the antioxidant potential,
Xanthohumol presents values even higher than Vitamin E or Polyphenol 60.

In vitro studies by Miranda et al. and Rodriguez et al. proved the protective and antioxidant effect of prenylated hop chalcones, especially Xanthohumol and Desmethylxanthohumol, towards low-density lipoproteins (LDL).

Xanthohumol reduced lipid peroxidation by more than 70% after 5 hours of incubation compared to the control system.

Antioxidant activity of the Xanthohumol Complex

The Xanthohumol complex exhibits 30 times stronger antioxidant activity than vitamin C. Xanthohumol acts as the first line of antioxidant protection and prevents the conversion of hydrogen peroxide into a free radical.

Anti-inflammatory effects

Excessive levels of IL-12 in immune responses such as inflammation or autoimmune responses have given rise to considerable interest in IL-12 blocking agents.

Xanthohumol inhibits the IL-12 production in the stimulated macrophages by downregulating NFĸB. The in vivo anti-inflammatory effect of XN was assessed using a model of chronic oxazolone-induced dermatitis in the mouse ear. The evaluation results showed that XN alleviates dermatitis, indicating the potential use of XN in dermatitis treatments.

Anti-bacterial activity

Xanthohumol inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, responsible, among others, for purulent skin infections:

Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus pyogenes

Staphylococcus epidermidis

Propionibacterium acnes

Kocura rhizophila

The high activity, inhibiting the growth of bacteria, allows for performing effective skin care for people with problems like acne vulgaris and rosacea.

Anti-ageing effects

Metalloproteinases are involved in ageing processes in the skin, including increased distribution of extracellular matrix components, in particular collagen, elastin and fibronectin. Xanthohumol has a high inhibitory activity of the MMP-1 and MMP-8 metalloproteinases, hence slowing down the ageing processes.

At the same time, this magnificent compound protects the skin against photo-ageing by reducing the negative effects of UV radiation.

Brightening effect

In response to oxidative stress induced by UVA and UVB radiation, Keratinocytes produce GM-CSF cytokines that bind to a specific GMCSFR receptor and then activate STAT_1, STAT-3 and STAT-5 transduction signals. It is followed by the stimulation of melanocytes and active proteins of TRP1 and TRP2 tyrosinase, which eventually leads to discolouration of the skin.

Xanthohumol, by inhibiting the secretion of GM-CSF, contributes to lightening the existing discolourations. It also prevents the formation of new ones and reduces skin redness.
